Travel Insurance for
Business Travellers

Many people tend to forget it when they think of travel, but the vast majority of travel that takes place today is business travel. Most business travelers are on the road more than once a year, however, so when it comes to travel insurance, things must get quite expensive. Or do they?

Many insurance companies now offer international health insurance for business travelers or anyone who takes multiple trips in a year. Most often this is the exact same thing as purchasing regular travel insurance, with many policies covering trip cancellation/interruption, loss or theft, medical emergencies, and medical evacuation. There are a couple of unique situations to consider when purchasing multiple trip insurance for business travel.

The first thing to take into consideration is not just how much of anything you may encounter while traveling is covered by your group health insurance plan, but also how much is covered by your worker's compensation benefits. Because you are basically "on-the-clock" during these trips, you may be eligible for benefits should you become sick or injured in relation to your business. It is imperative to tally up the total benefit to you in the event something work-related does happen to you, as well as to establish what is considered work-related and what is not.

Another factor is the number of trips you take per year, and the length of those trips. While the overall number of trips generally does not factor into deciding your premium, there most likely will be different rates for trips of different lengths. Often times, you will be limited to trips of 30 days or less, though some policies will set a limit at 60 days or more.

As with all travel insurance policies, it is essential to read the fine print on all the policies you encounter while shopping to ensure that you understand what is covered, what is not, and the conditions of that coverage. For example, just because some policies may cover any costs you incur if you need to be evacuated to your home country does not mean that this is a universal provision. Also, be aware that the time limits on trips can affect the amount of coverage you may receive for a given rate. If you take longer trips, it is wise to double-check to make sure that everything is covered for these longer periods of time, and not just in the shorter time-limit policies. And as always, never be afraid to ask the agent you’re dealing with to elaborate on a given plan. Fine print doesn't always make sense when it's read, so make sure it does make sense before you sign and purchase anything. Checking online policies at websites like AA Travel can make purchasing process clear and efficient and allows you contrast and compare travel insurance quotes.
